Spinning: cast, chase, catch
Tuna spinning is an intense, adrenaline-fuelled day that taps into the natural behaviour of the big predators: when tunas and little tunny push schools of small baitfish to the surface, gulls dive in and create what's known as a bird school.
The skipper spots these bird schools and approaches at speed so you can cast your lure at exactly the right moment. Pure visual hunting in the open waters of the Catalan Mediterranean.

Young bluefin tuna
Specimens of 30–80 kg. Intense fight, but more manageable than chumming big game.
XXL little tunny
A Mediterranean native tuna. Catches of 5–15 kg. A lively battle on the rod.
Atlantic bonito
Smaller (3–8 kg) but plentiful. A real fighter and excellent spinning practice.
Frigate mackerel
A small, scrappy tuna. Frequent catches in summer bird schools.
Dorado (mahi-mahi)
A colourful, hard-fighting pelagic. Joins bird schools in late summer and autumn.
Pompano
A Mediterranean sailfin. An occasional, highly technical catch on spinning gear.

Arrival at the marina. Boarding, briefing on lures and casting technique.
Sailing offshore
We hunt for active bird schools: diving gulls are a giveaway that tunas are pushing baitfish.
Spotting
When we see a bird school, the skipper closes in at good speed to avoid spooking the fish.
Cast and retrieve
You cast your lure to the edge of the bird school. Retrieve with action. If you get a hit: hold on.
Fight and land
An intense 10–30 minute battle depending on size. The skipper handles the boat to avoid tangles.
Back to the marina
A relaxed cruise home. Photos of your trophy and a day you won't forget.
